			Welcome to SouthWest, an educational website supporting and extending radio features realized by Roger Smith and Gareth Watkins. We have over twenty years experience in radio production, and are both currently working for New Zealand's national public broadcaster - Radio New Zealand/Te Reo Irirangi o Aotearoa.

			Porirua Ladies The attitudes towards caring for the mentally ill in New Zealand have changed dramatically over the last 70 years. How did our society cope with those who were regarded as "hopeless", "mad" or simply unmanageable?

			Ik[s]land(s) We are currently working on a major series looking at a cross-section of New Zealand composers. One of the foundation-stones of this production is the idea of islands within islands - geographical and human - and the building of bridges between individuals and cultures.

			Visiting Ashley Sixty years ago Ashley Heenan joined the permanent staff of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service. In a career spanning 41 years he rose to prominence as a music administrator, composer and conductor. Ashley passed away on 6 September 2004 - just days short of his 79th birthday.

			Room at the Inn Christmas Day 2002 saw volunteers provide meals and gifts for more than 100 homeless and needy people at the Aro Valley Community Centre hall in Wellington, as well as delivering 80 meals to house-bound residents.
